A few weeks ago, Brookyln-based artist Matt Huynh flew into Sydney and held a one-night-only special event, exhibiting a preview of his newest comic book, ‘Magpie, Magpie’.
The 5 to 9 Life was lucky enough to be invited along to the event, and our Sydney writer Claire Benito has shared her thoughts of the night via words and visuals.

He’s showcasing an advanced preview of his latest comic book and exhibiting some of his original artwork.

Matt Huynh, graphic novelist and artist talks to The 5 to 9 Life about his creative process and the impetus behind ‘MA’, his recent comic book – part family history and part response to the ‘distorted rhetoric’ of the ‘Stop the boats’ political campaign.
Whilst The 5 to 9 Life has officially jumped ship to Melbourne, there is still some representation happening in Sydney.
And a couple weeks ago when an invitation arrived in my inbox to attend a comic book launch and exhibition of ‘MA’, two main emotions arose: jealousy that I was not in Sydney for the event and excitement that I was able to send a couple of representatives to attend the event as I experienced it vicariously through their words and photos.
