We want the funk!
Easily my favourite track off “To Pimp A Butterfly”, Kendrick Lamar has blessed ‘King Kunta’ with some fun and vibrant visuals welcoming us into his town of Compton, LA.
‘King Kunta’, directed by Canadian filmmaker Director X, is a love letter to Lamar’s native Compton, CA. Surrounded by friends, Lamar raps through the record’s closest thing to a feel-good track in a variety of locations around the city.
The single is a ferocious, racially charged song that references Michael Jackson, Bill Clinton and Richard Pryor, all to depict Lamar as a force breaking loose of the bonds imposed by the powers that be.
Lamar’s rapping is unapologetic which is always a refreshing spin on things, but the hook really does bring that psychedelic 70s funk which totally reeled me in. Very catchy!
Now I run the game got the whole world talkin’, King Kunta
Everybody wanna cut the legs off him, King Kunta
Black man taking no losses
Bitch where was you when I was walkin’
Now I run the game got the whole world talkin’, King Kunta
