It’s always an exciting turn of events when you’re heading in the right direction and feel as though your dreams are coming true. As cliché as that sounds, I feel like I’m heading in the right direction and luckily for Melbourne based designer Danielle Pelly, her label Ena Pelly was the result of her own dream coming true – and it’s bringing another level of luxurious, casual style to the local streets of Melbourne.
We had the chance to connect with the designer and now, it’s time for you to discover Melbourne’s newest fashion label collection of women’s clothing: ENA PELLY.
1. Who are you and how would you describe yourself?
My name is Dani and I am the Director of the fashion label, ENA PELLY. I am a happy, fun, passionate person who is prone to over-thinking!
2. How did you get into Fashion design?
Since I was a little girl I have been interested in Fashion and Design. I took Art, Graphics and Textile classes all throughout high school then went on to study Textile Design at University.
3. Which 5 words would you use to describe your brand’s aesthetic?
Bold, Classic, Confident, Feminine and Unique.
4. Who is the ENA PELLY girl?
The ENA PELLY girl is both girl-next-door and brave adventurer – she is fun and down-to-earth and travels the world for inspiration and new experiences.
Aesthetically, she is defined by clean silhouettes, classic basics and innovative prints. She loves luxury in a no-fuss way and feels inspired when wearing her ENA PELLY pieces. She is confident, bold and expressive and counts comfort and functionality as key elements of her style.
5. What Inspired your new collection? Ink Botanic?
The Ink Botanic Collection was inspired by ancient Japanese dyeing techniques. I created the print myself by folding and tying the fabric and placing it into dye baths, to create a resist pattern. Tropical flowers were layered with the bold dye prints to create an exotic twist. I then used digital manipulation to turn the dyed fabric samples into modern and defined yardage prints.
6. Describe your personal style.
My personal style varies from day-to-day depending on my tasks are and where I need to be. I love a neutral colour palette worn with a bold print as the highlight pieces. I love mixing basics with more dressed up pieces to create a stylish yet easy, everyday look. I always love a great black or white pencil skirt worn with an ENA PELLY cotton tee, a denim jacket and a pair of Converse or Nike sneakers.
I love stripes and have lately been getting into the vertical stripe, a nice change from the horizontal stripe. Leather is also one of my all time favourites – leather pants, skirt and jacket are all a must in my wardrobe.
7. What is a typical day like for you?
I usually get up early.. 6-6.30ish, and start my day with a coffee or two whilst checking my email. Then a walk to get some fresh air 🙂
I am usually sitting in my studio from morning until evening working on various tasks – ranging from planning new ranges, designing new ranges, working on new print design, replying to emails or planning my next photo shoot.
8. And what happens after 5pm?
I love cooking dinner with a glass of wine in hand; my favourite way to relax after sitting at the computer for the day. I always end up back on the computer replying to emails or hunting for inspiring imagery.. and Instagram of course. I love Instagram.
9. Pay it forward: What’s the best advice you’ve been given that you would be happy to share with others?
[The best advice I’ve been given is] That hard work pays off. This is so true; if you want to achieve anything you have to make a great detailed plan and stick to it. I think being organised is the first step to achieving anything. Communication is key – you have to communicate exactly what you want in order to get it. Listen to your gut instincts, usually your intuition will tell you which path to follow.
10. What is next on your to-do list?
I’m dreaming big here – to take our brand to New York! I would love to show the ENA PELLY brand at a trade fair in NY towards the end of this year.
*Special thanks to Diamond Dozen and ENA PELLY.
