The first time I ever heard this song was via an SNL Performance that Sam Smith had done and the performance of the song was so delicate and raw, that I actually ended up shedding a tear or two.
Seriously. I don’t know if it was the state of mind that I was in or if I was going through something at the time, but hearing the lyrics of ‘Lay Me Down’ for the first time (and a couple times thereafter) had a major affect on me.
The official video however, presents a significant message showcasing a marriage between Smith and a fellow male. Same-sex marriage is still a hush-hush issue to some; but I’m happy that it’s finally getting its well-deserved spotlight. I don’t understand why it’s still an issue. It’s 2015 for goodness sake!
And as Smith illustrates in his 4-minute video; same-sex marriage should be celebrated – not shunned.
“This song holds a very dear place in my heart”, Smith wrote on Facebook. “With this video myself and Ryan Hope the director have decided to make a statement and showcase something we passionately believe in. This video shows my dreams that one day gay men and women and transgendered men and women all over the world, like all our straight families and friends, will be able to get married under any roof, in any city, in any town, in any village, in any country. I hope you enjoy it. I love you all.”
Check out that first encounter I had with the song below via his SNL appearance.
