Sampha: Happens

I am falling in love with the vocal ability of Sampha. Initially introduced to us on Drake's 'Nothing Was The Same' on his single, Too Much, Sampha has released the B-side of the aforementioned track with accompanied simplistic visuals for the track, Happens.

Sampha - Happens

London based artist Sampha has had a very good year, recently featuring on Drake’s newest album, “Nothing Was The Same”. And from that record, we were all introduced to his vocal talents (particularly that moment when he performed live with Drake on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon), but here we get an idea of the extent of his skills on a piano with new track ‘Happens’.

The track itself is beautifully minimalistic in its approach with just piano and vocals. Nothing more, nothing less. When you have a voice with as much character as Sampha’s, you can afford the luxury of such minimalism, and when you can play the keys the way he does…it definitely makes for a great listen.

The video takes an equally stripped back approach, featuring a moody silhouette of Sampha, a possible reference to the opening lyric ‘I see you in the dark’.

Anchored by a jazzy piano line, Sampha’s soaring, yearning vocals preside, ‘I can’t let this happen again’.
