Daughter: Youth

Sometimes a simple video is all you need for a song. Especially, when you know that song is already a great one. Emotionally driven with heartfelt lyrics, 'Youth' by Daughter is a song that speaks for itself.

If you follow me on twitter (@chauie), you should know that I am in love with UK trio Daughter. And their song ‘Youth’ is honestly one of my favourite tune of theirs – possibly my favourite song right now.

So it should come as no surprise that I was absolutely ecstatic to find out they had released a video to accompany the aforementioned song this weekend.

The black-and-white video adopts a minimalist approach, allowing the song to speak for itself. Members Elena Tonra, Igor Haefeli and Remi Aguilella stand fixated to their designated spots, on an entirely darkened stage — save for three spotlights — and allowing themselves only enough movement to successfully play their instruments.

A hauntingly bitter ballad, the song itself is infused with more old-school folk sensibility than pop. Lead singer Tonra delivers her deeply emotional lyrics beautifully in the accompanying monochromatic video.

“And if you’re in love, then you are the lucky one,
‘Cause most of us are bitter over someone.
Setting fire to our insides for fun,
To distract our hearts from ever missing them.”

Daughter will be heading down under next month for this year’s Splendour in the Grass festival.
