This Friday night, cancel whatever plans you already had and head on down to The Evelyn in Fitzroy (351 Brunswick St) instead for what is expected to be a HUGE night – all in celebration of the late, great James Dewitt Yancey aka J Dilla.
“Join us to celebrate the life and memory of the great J Dilla A.K.A Jay Dee (February 7, 1974–February 10, 2006). Often described as ‘your producers favourite producer’ Dilla left behind an outstanding collection of songs, music and records, and a legacy as one of the most loved, talented and influential artists of our time.
“His own albums “Ruff Draft” & “Donuts” on Stones Throw, “Welcome 2 Detroit” & “The Shining” on BBE Records alongside “Jay Loves Japan” and his work on his brother Illa-J’s album “Yancey Boys” stand out as masterpieces of modern music production and capture the imagination of producers, DJs & all music lovers.
“Come and join us on the 22nd of February as we host an audio visual tribute to an artist who seamlessly fused the worlds of jazz, hip hop and everything in between into the songs we cannot get enough of today.
Presented by my favourite musical duo from Melbourne, Condensed Milk, the night dedicated to Dilla will consist of local DJs and producers playing music composed and inspired by J Dilla including unreleased material, live remixes and MPC sets. Chronic Sans will be providing a visual element to the night.
Participating artists listed on the bill include Hazel (France), M-Phazes, Amin PaYnE, SilentJay, Jackson Miles, Billy Hoyle, J Smith, and Rusty Ryan (UK).
Damn, this event makes me wish I had switched my visit to Melbourne from last weekend to this weekend, or maybe I should have extended my stay just that little bit longer.
