As an Easter present/surprise to the rest of the world, Aubrey Graham aka Drake premiered his latest video for ‘Take Care’ featuring Rihanna.
The title track from his 2011 sophomore album is one of my favourite songs from the record and I’m so glad there is now a video to accompany it. Featuring a blonde Rihanna, the footage shows the two getting very intimate with one another, animals moving in slow motion, and footage of snowcapped mountains. Not sure what meaning the animals and mountains hold for the video or the song for that matter, but it ain’t so bad.
The music is taken from Jamie xx’s remix of Gil Scott-Heron’s version of ‘I’ll Take Care of You’, and is the second song Drake and Rihanna have collaborated on (the first being ‘What’s My Name?‘ from Rihanna’s “Loud” record) and you can just tell from watching both videos, that the chemistry is obvious between them.
Some may say that the production of this track is too simple… but I like it. With basic piano chords and some drums, it is still quite solemn and almost depressing, true to Drake’s style of songwriting, with Rihanna’s vocals adding feeling and depth. The emotional and tormented performance she gives isn’t what you would expect from her, with the soulful lyrics taking Rihanna back to her old R&B style of music, while the emptiness of the song makes it uniquely tender and intimate.
Know you’ve been hurt by someone else
I can tell by the way you carry yourself
If you let me, here’s what I’ll do
I’ll take care of you
I’ve loved and I’ve lost
