An Interview with Mell Hall

The 5 to 9 Life is launching a new category with interviews via the "After Dark Adventures". Expect to see and read interviews with many different individuals who all hold one characteristic: talent. Talent in a creative field namely. Talented individuals that you should all get to know a little better. And the first is my friend from Melbourne: Melinda Hall of The Library Bag.

The ‘After Dark Adventures’ is more than just a new category for The 5 to 9 Life. It’s also where I will be posting interviews with the people I think you should get to know better. Some are friends, some are strangers, but all of them inspire me in one way or another and they each hold with them a skill in the creative field. Creative being anything from design, music, art, writing, fashion… you get the point.

And here is my first: Mell Hall of The Library Bag.

I first met Mell last year at the Carbon Launch Party where we were both thrown together to be door bitches for the first night. Funnily enough, we’ll be repeating those roles again this year. Guess we did a good job haha. Anyhow, Mell is a gorgeous girl but she is more than just a pretty face. She’s ambitious, creative, hardworking, super-nice, and has a long list of talents and accomplishments to her name!

Check out my interview with the girl I’m lucky enough to call a friend. Watch out for this one – she is a force to be reckoned with!

Who are you and what do you do?

Hello there. My name is Mell Hall. I’m a Journalist/Publicist/PR Practitioner from Melbourne. I like words and music and have established a job that incorporates them both on a daily basis.

Tell us about The Library Bag and how the idea came about.

The idea came to life after deciding to officially go ‘Freelance’ working on/with a basis of publications, promotions and companies. I basically needed a heading – something to prosper my thoughts. My logo and overall concept represents the adventure and child-like qualities of dreaming, lack of boundaries and ‘no-restrictions’.

What does a typical day at The Library Bag consist of?

Coffee. Writing. Music. Observing. Press Releases. Social Media. Interviews. Meeting strangers. Taking notes. Music. Making it happen. Coffee.

What are the 5 essential items in your (Library) Bag?

  • Determination.
  • Notepad and Pen.
  • Positive attitude.
  • Avocado and feta on sourdough.
  • Time management.

Where are some of your favourite places to wine, dine and party in Melbourne after hours?

I love the cocktail list at Carlton Club, the rooftop at Cookie, the constant turnover of musical bliss at the Northcote Social Club, the tapas at Ricocos and the all-day breakfast in the Melbourne laneway’s of Degraves. And the after dark/all night antics of some ‘unnamed’ nightspots…

What is the soundtrack to your 5 to 9 life?

A lot of the time it relates to who I’m writing about and/or what gig I’m reviewing – I like to source out new-talent, it’s apart of what I do and feel like I can relate to the challenge of ‘starting-from-scratch’. It’s almost as if you’re achieving with them. On repeat at this very VERY moment in time: The Wombats, Northeast Party House, Black Fox, Polo Club and a weak spot for Big Boi! Go figure.

Describe your personal style.

Individualism with a classic twist – and a smile.

Rewind: what did you want to be when you “grew up”?

I actually did a PR presentation for a career’s subject in Year 6. Clueless to what it actually involved. I then threw out there Nurse, Professional Netballer and Chef before going full circle back to the Public Relations/Journalism field come VCE. And as they say the rest is historyyyy..! However, relentlessly hours listening to my father’s records set my path well on its way.

What inspires you to wake up in the morning?

The simple fact that I never know what my workday is going to bring – I never know what’s around the corner, who I may meet or what the possibilities are. Not having a routine suits me – the element of ‘surprise’ is a happy high to have.

Pay it forward: what advice have you been given that you would happily share with others?

If your dreams don’t scare the absolute f**cking shit out of you – You’re not dreaming big enough!
