This past weekend saw the Tropfest Film Festival go down in Sydney and I’m kind of disappointed that I missed out on it. Judging from the winning entry, “The Lemonade Stand”, seems it must of been a pretty great night – despite the torrential rain.
Director of the movie, Aletha Jones is living her own success story, having just won the top achievement two days after applying for Centrelink. A star-studded panel of judges including Geoffrey Rush, Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett, Toni Collette, Asher Keddie, Kieran Darcy-Smith and 2011 Movie Extra Tropfest winner Damon Gameau decided on the first prize winner to the comedy about a whimsical family business and the forces that conspire against it.
Tropfest Founder and Director, John Polson said of this year’s winner: “Lemonade Stand is an incredibly well made film and a favourite amongst the judges. There was intense discussion in the judging room, and some really interesting debates. Alethia should be very proud to have been selected by some of the industry’s greatest talent.”
A DVD of the shortlisted entries will be bundled with this weekend’s Sydney Morning Herald but you can watch the winning entry, “Lemonade Stand”, below.
For me, “Lemonade Stand” is kind of reminiscent of “Amelie”, and I understand now, after watching the short film, why it took out first prize. Definitely a great movie and a well-deserved win! Watch it now!
