Every year, millions of dollars on public transport MetroCards is lost in America (and Australia too). Students at NYU decided to develop a concept that could help better our world through recycling and help those in need by donating those lost funds to a charity each month.

Every year, millions of dollars worth of value on public transport MetroCards is lost or discarded in America. I’m sure that can be said for Australia too.

The students at NYU decided to change that and took a big step forward to not only making the world a better place, but to also help out those in need.

MetroChange takes this value and puts it to good use, before cards are discarded. Swipe your MetroCard at a MetroChange kiosk; the value on the card is transferred to a central fund. This fund is donated to a charity once per month. The physical card is taken for recycling.”

As a daily commuter of public transport, I am 100% in favour of this. Now, if only I could get the rest of Australia on board. Great idea!
