Julian Sartorius

A beat a day keeps the doctor away.

That seems to be the case with Berlin drummer, Julian Sartorious, who attempted to make beats each day of the year 2011 (that’s 365 beats!), and as a result, was able to present us with “The Beat Diary”.

Concert Review: Housse De Racket at City Beach Hotel

Housse De Racket were recently in Australia playing shows in Melbourne and Sydney. My brother and I managed to catch their performance in Sydney, which was also their last show of the year.

Singing tunes in both French and English, Housse De Racket is a band you should keep on your radar in the future.

Check out my review of their live show.

Jay-Z: Where I’m From

Watching Jay-Z live in Brooklyn at the new Barclays Centre was an experience in itself during the New York leg of my US trip recently.

This week, HOVA released a documentary in the form of a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of his 8-straight shows at the Barclay’s Centre.

Andy Allo: People Pleaser

Andy Allo emerges with the long-awaited visual for ‘People Pleaser’, the super funky number that is to usher in the arrival of her second album, “Superconductor”.

Elements of Prince are obviously present in this mix of saxophones, trombones and bass licks, all done with pristine precision and spunk by the New Power Generation crew who backs Allo up in a sound that makes you want to get up and dance!

An Interview with Ta-ku

This next edition of the ‘After Dark Adventures’ is a pretty special one.

2012 has been a pretty crazy year for The 5 to 9 Life. Not only did I get to do some travelling, but I also was introduced to some new Australian talent – musicians, beatmakers, artists, writers, athletes, and the list goes on.

As a writer, I have been lucky enough to interview some of these people that I’ve been introduced to, and so I was very excited to have recently been given the opportunity to interview the talented Ta-ku.

Nardwuar vs. Flying Lotus

Nardwuar’s interviews are always thoroughly entertaining and super informative. And this interview with L.A.’s Flying Lotus definitely fits that description!

New Zealand born producer/DJ Amin PaYnE recently released a fresh new track titled ‘What Love Is’.

Remixing Slum Village’s ‘The Look of Love’, PaYnE’s take on the track had me rethinking things I thought I already knew..
